Start Over

I really need to start using this blog more. And actually figure out how to use it properly. I’ve found documenting what I do in life really helps me stay focused on my goals.

This year I made a New Years resolution. I made a resolution to get healthier. Very cliché I know, but this time I am determined to stick to it. So far so good. In 6 weeks I have lost 5kg. My initial goal was to lose a kilo a week, but after 4 weeks my weight loss slowed. I’ve started running in the morning before the kids wake up. It’s been a struggle, I really don’t like running or getting up early, but it’s something I’m determined to keep up. I was running a few years ago but stopped when I got pregnant with my daughter (damn you morning sickness!).

I’m also back at the gym. Doing PT twice a week with a friend and doing 5 classes. Mainly cardio and some weights. A couple of weeks ago I did a body scan and it showed that since October 2017 I have lost muscle. It upset me but at the moment I am focused on losing fat. Once I’ve got to an ideal amount of body fat I will focus more on weight training and getting stronger.

I have a goal weight, but I understand that muscle weighs more than fat, so I’m trying not to focus on it. It’s an all over healthiness that I’m aiming for. I’ve already noticed an improvement in my fitness. Every time I run I am able to go a little further or a little faster. I am less out of breath during the gym classes and I generally have more energy. I’ve even been exceeding my 10,000 daily step goal.

The App MyFitnessPal has played a huge part in this years weight loss success. I had no idea how many calories I was consuming until I started using it. Lately I’ve been on 1520 calories a day but I’ve just dropped to 1450 to help me lose weight for our tropical holiday in April. It has helped me so much. I was over eating carbs (and the app allows for plenty of carbs!), not having enough protein and consuming way too much fat. Since using it seriously I have cut out a lot of dairy, started eating leaner meats and my vegie and fruit intake has increased. I’ve also been trying to eat cleaner. Getting carbs from sweet potato and pumpkin instead of rice and pasta. This is something I am still working on.

Overall I am excited to see what will happen if I continue to do what I’m currently doing. Obviously I’m human and I’ve had a few slip ups along the way, but I’m happy with how my body has changed and how I am feeling.

10 week challenge

I have been really unhealthy lately. Skipping breakfast (or worse, grabbing a donut from the servo!), missing the gym, not cooking the best food, ordering takeaway and eating out a lot. So the time has come to start turning that around. This is a promise I have made to myself hundreds of times. I’ve signed up to countless online programs, started many food diaries and looked up healthy recipe’s on Pinterest. Last time I successfully lost weight was during the Anytime Fitness 8 week challenge, which I did in the very early stages of my second pregnancy. However, giving birth 6 weeks early, losing my job and life in general has caused me to stress eat and totally lose interest in my own health.

Last week I signed up for another Anytime Fitness challenge. This one goes for 10weeks and I will be doing it with my husband. I’ve started personal training again, twice a week with a friend, and I’m in the process of cleaning up my home gym. I’m the kind of person who needs people to push me when it comes to exercise. I don’t really enjoy going to the gym on my own. Not because I am intimidated by the people there or because I don’t like the environment, I’m just not motivated enough. When I do workout on my own, I never work nearly as hard as when I’m with a trainer or in a class.

My plan. To win the challenge. Why? Because first prize is 12 months free gym membership and $2500. It sounds horrible and isn’t ideal but money is pretty good motivation for me. Since having my daughter I have been really unhappy with the way I look and I don’t just mean my weight. On August 2nd I turned 31 and I think I look older than I am. So I would love a confidence boost. To lose weight, have a little lip filler, maybe a bit of cheeky Botox and my eyebrows tattooed. Yes I’m vein. But at the moment I feel like an old, fat Mum.

I do have another reason. At the young age of 32 my Mum was diagnosed with breast cancer. She endured chemo, radiotherapy and surgery and was eventually given the all clear. But she wasn’t in the clear. The cancer came back. It came back as a tumour on the  outside of her oesophagus. For the next 5 years I would watch my Mum, the woman who bought me into the world, have surgery after surgery. Go though chemo again and again. Have more radiotherapy. Start on steroids. Lose her hair. Be horribly ill. Go into hospital, come home, only to go back into hospital. When we received good news, it was always followed by bad news shortly after. It was the most traumatic few years of my life and I wasn’t even the one going through it all. She passed away at 49 years old. She never got to met her 2 biological grandchildren or see her youngest daughter get married.

I don’t want to end up like my Mum, or my Grandmother, who was also diagnosed with breast cancer and passed from non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Cancer runs in my family and I want to do everything I can to prevent myself from getting it (a double mastectomy is in my  future as is genetic testing).

The challenge starts on August 20th. Hubby and I are having a full body scan after our Sunday morning training. I will be trying to do a weekly blog update with my weight and diet.

Wish me luck!

Motivate Me!

So I had really great results with the Optimal Essentials 9 day detox. I lost a whopping 3 kilos! What now?  Nothing. I had my sister’s hens night where I danced and drank a lot and my husband’s birthday is coming up so I haven’t wanted to start another ‘diet’ just yet. I feel like since the detox I’ve put on weight, but I’m too scared to jump on the scales to find out. Unfortunately due to financial reasons I’ve had to put my gym membership on hold this month. This means my regular boxing Wednesday night and HIIT/Abs class on Thursday nights are a no-go for the next few weeks. Devastated would be an understatement.  I LOVE the gym! Seeing friends, being child free for a few hours and who doesn’t love that post workout euphoric feeling?!  Fingers crossed I get the job that I interviewed for today and I can get my large arse back to the gym ASAP! If all goes well I might even be able to afford personal training with my favourite PT again. That would be a dream come true!

In the meantime I have signed up to the TIFFXO program run by Tiffany Hall. It’s something I’ve wanted to try but didn’t have the spare money. Well it must be fate because for the month of May the TIFFXO program is free! I’m currently on day 5 but I haven’t done any of the workouts, I’ve only been following the meal plan. I have just lost all of my motivation. I’m not the kind of person who loves to workout. That’s why I’ve always done group classes or PT because that way I am forced to work hard. I’ve tried looking at unflattering photos of myself, reciting what I don’t like about my body to myself in the mirror, looking at photos of women who have amazing bodies, trying on clothes that used to fit and looking at photos of myself when I was smaller. But none of that will motivate me enough to get off my butt and workout ON MY OWN.

HELP ME!!!! I need tips and tricks to get me back on track. We don’t have any special occasions coming up and I’m not likely to bump into an ex anytime soon so I have become stuck in a body rut. I’m not happy with how I look but at the same time I can’t be bothered putting in the effort to change.

Back when I thought I was fat, but wasn’t
