10 week challenge

I have been really unhealthy lately. Skipping breakfast (or worse, grabbing a donut from the servo!), missing the gym, not cooking the best food, ordering takeaway and eating out a lot. So the time has come to start turning that around. This is a promise I have made to myself hundreds of times. I’ve signed up to countless online programs, started many food diaries and looked up healthy recipe’s on Pinterest. Last time I successfully lost weight was during the Anytime Fitness 8 week challenge, which I did in the very early stages of my second pregnancy. However, giving birth 6 weeks early, losing my job and life in general has caused me to stress eat and totally lose interest in my own health.

Last week I signed up for another Anytime Fitness challenge. This one goes for 10weeks and I will be doing it with my husband. I’ve started personal training again, twice a week with a friend, and I’m in the process of cleaning up my home gym. I’m the kind of person who needs people to push me when it comes to exercise. I don’t really enjoy going to the gym on my own. Not because I am intimidated by the people there or because I don’t like the environment, I’m just not motivated enough. When I do workout on my own, I never work nearly as hard as when I’m with a trainer or in a class.

My plan. To win the challenge. Why? Because first prize is 12 months free gym membership and $2500. It sounds horrible and isn’t ideal but money is pretty good motivation for me. Since having my daughter I have been really unhappy with the way I look and I don’t just mean my weight. On August 2nd I turned 31 and I think I look older than I am. So I would love a confidence boost. To lose weight, have a little lip filler, maybe a bit of cheeky Botox and my eyebrows tattooed. Yes I’m vein. But at the moment I feel like an old, fat Mum.

I do have another reason. At the young age of 32 my Mum was diagnosed with breast cancer. She endured chemo, radiotherapy and surgery and was eventually given the all clear. But she wasn’t in the clear. The cancer came back. It came back as a tumour on the  outside of her oesophagus. For the next 5 years I would watch my Mum, the woman who bought me into the world, have surgery after surgery. Go though chemo again and again. Have more radiotherapy. Start on steroids. Lose her hair. Be horribly ill. Go into hospital, come home, only to go back into hospital. When we received good news, it was always followed by bad news shortly after. It was the most traumatic few years of my life and I wasn’t even the one going through it all. She passed away at 49 years old. She never got to met her 2 biological grandchildren or see her youngest daughter get married.

I don’t want to end up like my Mum, or my Grandmother, who was also diagnosed with breast cancer and passed from non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Cancer runs in my family and I want to do everything I can to prevent myself from getting it (a double mastectomy is in my  future as is genetic testing).

The challenge starts on August 20th. Hubby and I are having a full body scan after our Sunday morning training. I will be trying to do a weekly blog update with my weight and diet.

Wish me luck!

Motivate Me!

So I had really great results with the Optimal Essentials 9 day detox. I lost a whopping 3 kilos! What now?  Nothing. I had my sister’s hens night where I danced and drank a lot and my husband’s birthday is coming up so I haven’t wanted to start another ‘diet’ just yet. I feel like since the detox I’ve put on weight, but I’m too scared to jump on the scales to find out. Unfortunately due to financial reasons I’ve had to put my gym membership on hold this month. This means my regular boxing Wednesday night and HIIT/Abs class on Thursday nights are a no-go for the next few weeks. Devastated would be an understatement.  I LOVE the gym! Seeing friends, being child free for a few hours and who doesn’t love that post workout euphoric feeling?!  Fingers crossed I get the job that I interviewed for today and I can get my large arse back to the gym ASAP! If all goes well I might even be able to afford personal training with my favourite PT again. That would be a dream come true!

In the meantime I have signed up to the TIFFXO program run by Tiffany Hall. It’s something I’ve wanted to try but didn’t have the spare money. Well it must be fate because for the month of May the TIFFXO program is free! I’m currently on day 5 but I haven’t done any of the workouts, I’ve only been following the meal plan. I have just lost all of my motivation. I’m not the kind of person who loves to workout. That’s why I’ve always done group classes or PT because that way I am forced to work hard. I’ve tried looking at unflattering photos of myself, reciting what I don’t like about my body to myself in the mirror, looking at photos of women who have amazing bodies, trying on clothes that used to fit and looking at photos of myself when I was smaller. But none of that will motivate me enough to get off my butt and workout ON MY OWN.

HELP ME!!!! I need tips and tricks to get me back on track. We don’t have any special occasions coming up and I’m not likely to bump into an ex anytime soon so I have become stuck in a body rut. I’m not happy with how I look but at the same time I can’t be bothered putting in the effort to change.

Detox Done! (Thankfully) Results are in

So I have finally finished the Optimal Essentials 9 day detox and I must say that I am damn impressed with the results.  My weight fluctuated over the 9 days but mostly went down.  In total I lost a whole 3kg! It would normally take me months to lose that much weight.  I didn’t follow the program exactly.  One hour of HIIT exercise a day was recommended.  I worked out maybe three times in the whole 9 days.  I didn’t do any HIIT and I didn’t do an hours worth.  Could you imagine the amount of weight I would have lost if I did?!  I also didn’t meditate.  I tried a couple of times and just fell asleep (it’s tiring being a Mum of 2).

There were so many positives about this detox.  The Optimal Essentials Super Detox powder wasn’t disgusting.  I’ve had some green powders that are just undrinkable.  Even mixed with smoothies they are just foul.  This one had a slight lemon flavour.  Was definitely easy to drink and I plan to continue having it.  During the day I never went hungry.  I was eating 5 meals a day and fasting after dinner.  The meals were big enough to keep me going all day and small enough that I wasn’t full.  I did struggle at night.  Normally I would have a snack after I’ve put the kids to bed.  Instead I would make a herbal tea and keep myself occupied.  It was so hard not to raid my son’s chocolate stash!!!  The cost of the food wasn’t too bad either.  We did one big shop then maybe 2 small shops during the week to get a few things we had run out of.  I’d estimate $220 spent altogether on food and the powder.  One thing I didn’t expect was how good my skin would get.  Because I wasn’t eating any processed or sugary foods my skin cleared up beautifully.

Of course with the positives come a few negatives.  The program is 3 days worth of meals that you repeat 3 times.  By the third lot I was getting sick of eating the same food over and over again.  Not that the food was bad, it was actually yummy, but it got kind of bland.  I also felt like I was doing a lot of food prepping.  Usually when I prep I spend a whole morning in the kitchen and get meals ready for the week. But this time I was spending the morning prepping meals for that day.  Good thing was I didn’t stray off the diet because the food was already made up and I could grab it easily.  The program recommends 3 litres of water a day and I think to some people that might seem like a lot.  Personally, I normally drink around that much anyway so it didn’t bother me.

So my results are, drumroll please…..

Arms -1cm each, Chest -4.5cm, Waist -1.5cm, Hips -2cm, Thigh +.5cm, Calves the same.  And three kilos gone!  Woohoo!!!

I have learnt a lot from this detox.  I will try not to eat anything after dinner and will limit my caffeine intake (I found I was falling asleep a lot faster at night, good thing too because my daughter has decided 5.30am is a good time to wake up). I don’t need to feel full after a meal, I can always have a small healthy snack in a few hours if I need.  And most importantly, I can lose weight when I try.  If I ever have a special event to attend or we go on holiday (I wish) this detox will definitely be something I will do again.

Give it a go yourself.  Go to optimalessentials.com and find the 9 day detox.

Detox Update (I f**ked up)

I want to say that’s its been the easiest 5 days of my life because the food is delicious, I’m never hungry and I’ve been working out every night, but that would by lying.  I have done better than I thought, the first 4 days went down without a hitch.  I was eating 5 very healthy and perfectly portioned meals a day, drinking heaps of water and green tea and exercising.  I did have a mild headache day 2 and 3 but nothing major.

Today however, I messed up.  We went out for lunch at a Vietnamese restaurant and I had a glass of Moscato.  The sweetest, sugariest, alcoholic wine possible.  After having no sugar for 5 days it tasted sweeter than normal and I couldn’t finish it.  For lunch itself I had a chicken salad without the dressing, so I didn’t screw up the detox as bad as I could have, but I still feel like I messed up.  My intention was to follow the meal plan exactly so I could give honest results.  Now I don’t feel like I can do that.

As I am typing this I am snacking on cottage cheese and berries while holding onto a full bladder because I don’t want to get up and pee again.  I am 100% back to the detox plan and still intend to review it at the end of the 9 days.  I will always be completely honest.  Today was a slip up that could have been avoided. I wasn’t craving sweets or alcohol, it was just a temporary lapse of judgement that I now regret.  But, I will not beat myself up about it.

So far I have lost 2.15kg and am really looking forward to doing measurements again at the end.  The Optimal Essentials 9 day detox has been easy to follow with a variety of yummy foods. I do, however, suggest you don’t start the detox the day after Easter when the house is still full of chocolate. That has made it a little challenging at times 🙂
